Extending and Enhancing Literacy Learning in Afterschool Programs: A Practice Guide

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy’s practice guide, Extending and Enhancing Literacy Learning in Afterschool Programs, was developed to help afterschool providers nationwide incorporate literacy skill development into their programs.

The practice guide provides detailed, evidence-based information to help afterschool providers not only understand how literacy skills develop and can best be supported through afterschool programming, but also to help them choose among the myriad of curricula options on the market. The guide’s section on evidence-based curricula evaluates 17 literacy-focused programs to help afterschool providers select the best fit for their programs based on factors including target literacy areas, staffing and training requirements, costs, and results. Development of the practice guide was made possible by a generous grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

Introduction: Implementing an Effective Afterschool Literacy Program
Tuesday, June 20, 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET

This session will incorporate findings from a recent national survey completed by parents whose children attend afterschool programs and connect those results to successful practices in afterschool programming. Participants will be introduced to Extending and Enhancing Literacy Learning in Afterschool Programs: A Practice Guide – a new resource that highlights the progression of literacy development in children, the key characteristics of effective literacy programs, and a compendium of evidence-based curricula.

Module 1: Literacy Skill Development in the Early Grades
Tuesday, August 15, 2:00-3:30 p.m. ET

This session will explore, in depth, Section I of Extending and Enhancing Literacy Learning in Afterschool Programs: A Practice Guide, which focuses on literacy progressions in children from Pre-K through Grade 3. We will cover the characteristics of struggling readers as well as on-target readers, the foundational skills of literacy, and how to determine the first or next step for extending literacy learning in your program. Register here.

Module 2: Features of an Effective Literacy Program
Tuesday, August 22, 2:00 -3:30 p.m. ET

This session will explore, in depth, Section II of Extending and Enhancing Literacy Learning in Afterschool Programs: A Practice Guide, which focuses on the features of a high quality program that supports children’s literacy skill development. We will cover the latest research, program design elements, evidence-based instructional practices, and fix-up strategies. Register here.

Module 3: Compendium of Evidence-Based Curricula and Putting it All Together
Tuesday, August 29, 2:00-3:30 p.m. EST

This session will explore, in depth, Section III of Extending and Enhancing Literacy Learning in Afterschool Programs: A Practice Guide, which focuses on selecting an appropriate curriculum based on criteria for quality, price, design elements, and rigor. We will review some recommendations based on existing curricula evaluations. Participants will experience the process of putting these elements together to launch or enhance literacy learning within the afterschool setting and consider ways to engage parents.
