This past year, the Barbara Bush Foundation celebrated its 30-year “Pearl” anniversary. We focused on efforts that will continue to change lives through literacy for the next 30 years and beyond, including creating a National Action Plan for Adult Literacy, launching a Gap Map, and hosting our National Celebration of Reading and National Summit on Adult Literacy, which brought together industry experts and renowned authors to tackle the literacy crisis.

In 2018, the Barbara Bush Foundation recognized the life and legacy of our founder, Barbara Bush. We also celebrated having committed more than $110 million in support in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and achieved programmatic milestones with Story Mentors and XPRIZE.

In 2017, the Barbara Bush Foundation supported 160 family literacy programs across 12 states, and hosted the fifteenth annual Dallas Celebration of Reading and the inaugural Maine Celebration of Reading. And thanks in part to our transparency and focus on results, we were recognized among the top 1% of education nonprofits rated Platinum by GuideStar.

2016 was a year for person-powered momentum. We hit the 100,000 follower mark on our Facebook and Twitter channels, and another 100,000 people signed up to be literacy advocates. We brought together leaders across industries to spur innovation in the fields of early and adult learning through two symposiums.

As part of her 90th birthday celebration, Mrs. Bush announced our single largest investment ever to revolutionize the future of adult education: $7 million to fund the Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE competition. We also opened over 200 family literacy programs, which celebrated an average gain of two full years in reading scores for each participating parent.
